How to use Facebook Messenger without a Facebook account

01:23

Facebook is the most popular social networking site on internet. The huge popularity of the inbuilt chat engine of Facebook had made it to almost all the platforms in the form of its app, Messenger. It has almost 1 billion active users worldwide. It has been more than 5 years since it was first launched for mobile devices, available on Android and iOS. There had been many updates through these years which added many features including voice call and video call. In US, people are also able to send money through messenger.  Chat heads allows you to chat with people even while using other apps.

But is Facebook account a necessity for using messenger? Why should we opt for Messenger when we can have almost the same features of Messenger in Whatsapp and it just requires an active telephone number? Can we use Messenger without a Facebook account?  Can you deactivate Facebook account and still chat with your friends? Too many questions follow. Well let’s solve them one by one.

Facebook account is not mandatory to use Messenger. You can sign up using your mobile number, just like how you sign up for a Whatsapp account. You can chat with any other user that uses Messenger.  Now, what if you already have a Facebook account and you just want to use it for chatting with your friends. You cannot do that through your browser, but you would be able to do so via Messenger after deactivating your account. What if you already have a deactivated account? Just activate it and deactivate it again. Let’s see how we can do that.

If you already have a Facebook account.
  1. Install Facebook and Messenger apps and sign on to them.
  2. Open Facebook app
  3. Go to Settings->Security Settings
  4. Click on deactivate button
  5. Give reason for deactivation.
  6. Before you confirm, verify if the checkbox that says ‘Keep me signed on to messenger’ is checked
  7. If you have successfully deactivated your account, open messenger
  8. You can see all the contacts and chats from before

All your contacts will be able to see you online and chat with you just like before and your profile picture will be visible to them. They can see you on Facebook wherever you appear online but there won’t any profile associated with your id. If you want to do this using a deactivated account, first reactivate it and then follow the same procedure.

If you don’t have an account/Sign up using mobile phone
  1. Install Messenger and open it
  2. Click on ‘Continue with Phone number’
  3. Enter you mobile number and enter the verification code that is sent to the mobile number
  4. Enter your name and add a photo
  5. Allow the app to access your contacts if prompted.
  6. Once all the contacts are synced, you will be able to see all the contacts in your contact list that uses Messenger and you will be able to chat with them just as if you had a Facebook account.

  15. Maybe I am a bit biased but I am not sure why someone would use the messenger of facebook if opposed to using the actual platform. But, then again, the free phone calls and contacts,. Maybe it could be beneficial to some.
